Paternity

When a child is born to unmarried parents, paternity must be established. This not only establishes the father’s financial responsibly for the child, but it also allows him to become part of the child’s life.

How Is Paternity Determined?

There are a few methods of establishing paternity. If the father is prepared to take responsibility for the child and offer support, he may sign a voluntary acknowledgment of parentage. Once he does so, he is potentially responsible for child support, medical insurance, and other obligations. However, he has the right to spend time with the child and seek custody and/or visitation.

If the man believed to be the father denies his involvement, paternity can be determined by petitioning the court on your behalf to order the alleged father to undergo DNA testing to establish paternity.

The firm of Mahoney and Hauser, Ltd. helps fathers seeking paternity, custody and visitation rights. The firm also assists mothers striving to establish paternity in order to secure child support and other legal obligations of the father.
